Six pillars of community-led transformation
Each program is co-designed with the communities it serves — built on the same participatory methods used in our published research.
Capacity Building
We train local leaders, cooperative members and "local champions" — extensionists, milk-quality consultants, technologists and financial advisors — to co-facilitate research and lead change from within their own communities.
- One-day facilitator training for local champions
- Leadership development for cooperative members
- Training-needs assessments tailored to county context
Biodiversity Conservation
Community-based monitoring of ecosystems and wildlife, ecosystem restoration, and conservation mitigation work — carried out with partners including Friends of Kinangop Plateau and Olerai Community Wildlife Conservancy.
- Wildlife & wetland monitoring in Kinangop and Nyandarua
- Degraded ecosystem restoration and valuation of ecosystem services
- Community conservancy partnerships
Women Empowerment
Our Futures Literacy Labs were conducted with 60 farmers, 49 of them women. We centre women's leadership in dairy innovation, cooperative governance, and policy participation — addressing the structural barriers in credit, land and decision-making research shows they face.
- Women-led dairy and goat-milk innovation pilots
- Leadership training for cooperative governance roles
- Pathways into county-level policy participation
Youth Innovation
Rural youth too often see urban migration as the only path forward. We build climate, digital and entrepreneurial pathways that make staying — and innovating locally — a viable, aspirational choice.
- Futures literacy & foresight training for young people
- Climate leadership and entrepreneurship pathways
- Youth-designed innovation showcases
Digital Inclusion & AI for Development
Our research found access to digital technologies remains highly uneven, with women farmers particularly disadvantaged. This program works to close that gap — and to ensure rural voices shape Kenya's AI policy, not just receive its outcomes.
- Digital literacy training tailored to low-connectivity contexts
- Participatory input into Kenya's National AI Strategy
- Human-centred AI pilots in dairy & agriculture
Sustainable Livelihoods
From cooperative business models to value-chain innovation — like the dairy-to-cheese opportunity that sparked AFA's founding question — we help communities build economic resilience without compromising the ecosystems they depend on.
- Cooperative and communal-ownership business models
- Value-chain analysis for dairy & agriculture
- Climate-resilient livelihood diversification
